Enbridge plan to replace aging pipeline draws strong support at Grand Rapids hearing

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. — An oil company's plan to replace an aging pipeline with a new route found strong support Tuesday, Oct. 10, during an afternoon hearing in Grand Rapids.
Enbridge has proposed to replace its 50-year-old Line 3 pipeline, a 1,031-mile route from Hardisty, Alberta, to Superior, Wis., that crosses through a handful of Minnesota counties.
The project, which has cleared the state draft Environmental Impact Statement and comment period, is going through a new round of public hearings after the Minnesota Department of Commerce weighed in on the project in September, saying the state was "better off" if the company...

Altec Inc., a manufacturer of specialized aerial lift trucks, may be poised for another round of significant growth in Duluth.
Monday night, the Duluth City Council will likely vote to authorize an application for $550,000 in state economic development funds to help the company expand.
Altec already employs 229 people in Duluth and projects it could hire an additional 100 workers in the next couple of years, given the right help. The company anticipates an accompanying investment of about $12.5 million in the local production facility, located at the Clure Marine Terminal.

St. Scholastica receives federal support to strengthen rural healthcare

The College of St. Scholastica has been awarded $1.33 million by the federal government to offer stipends to graduate clinical social work students.
In a Thursday announcement, the college said qualifying students will commit to working in rural clinical settings in northern Minnesota, where they will focus on integrated behavioral health, which is said to connect patients’ health-related habits with their symptoms and diagnoses.
St. Scholastica’s Master of Social Work program will use the support to found The Rural Optimization of Behavioral Health for Underserved Settings and Trainees (ROBUST) initiative.
