Essentia offers revolutionary procedure to heart patients

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Duluth, Minnesota may be worlds apart, but the skills and training one doctor received in the capital city are making a difference in Northland heart patients. Dr. Kalkidan Bishu has joined the Heart and Vascular Center at St. Mary's Medical Center, with a focus on helping patients with mitral regurgitation (MR).

"Mitral regurgitation primarily is blood returning into the left upper chamber, called the left atrium, and the lungs. So what happens is the lungs get flooded with fluid, that causes people to become short of breath, even with minor exertion, grealty effecting their quality of life," says Dr. Bishu.
