The Board of Trustees and staff of the Northland Foundation awarded 68 grants totaling $403,613.61 during the third quarter of 2015.
Among some of the special awards made this past quarter was nearly $20,000 aimed at helping strengthen the Prek-Grade 3 continuum in order to improve school readiness and educational outcomes for children in the region. A total of 14 grants have been made to community/school district teams that participated in the Northland Foundation’s Early Childhood Summit held in April.
In addition, the Northland Foundation provided critical school supplies to 8 school districts whose student populations qualifying for free/reduced cost lunch are 40% or more. They are Aitkin, Bigfork, Bovey-Coleraine, Duluth (select schools), Hill City, International Falls, McGregor, and Mountain Iron-Buhl. Northland leverages its vendor relationships and bulk purchase discounts to provide many more supplies than could be purchased otherwise. Since 2000, Northland has donated $57,913 in supplies to northeastern Minnesota students in need.
