Essentia Health Foundation to celebrate new pediatric solarium
Friday, July 17, 2015
The Essentia Health Foundation next week will celebrate the construction of a new pediatric solarium at the Essentia Health St. Mary’s-Children’s Hospital in Duluth with a groundbreaking ceremony. It will be held from noon to 1:15 p.m., July 23, on the hospital’s eighth floor. The public is welcome to attend.
The solarium will be a space dedicated to teenagers and young adults receiving care at St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital. The space will be bathed in sunlight, with activity areas, access to fresh air and a view of Lake Superior. It will be a nourishing haven for kids with conditions such as cancer and other chronic illnesses.
For a child undergoing long-term medical treatment, sunshine and nature are just what the doctor ordered, sponsors said in a news release. Research shows that exposure to sunlight can lessen patient anxiety, boost alertness and even quicken the healing process.
