PolyMet dam permit applications advance

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday that two PolyMet applications for dam safety permits have been passed along to local governments and Indian bands for review.

The applications — for the mine's tailings basin and the hydrometallurgical residue facility — have already been reviewed by DNR dam and hydrology experts and a third-party private consulting company. 

After comments by local governments and band natural resource agencies, the DNR is expected to issue a draft permit for operation of the dam. That draft permit would go out for public comment, likely later this year.
