CLOQUET, MN (CBS-3) - Sappi North America has been honored with an award highlighting not only its investment but its innovation in Minnesota.

The award was given out by the Minnesota Governor's Office under the Department of Employment and Economic Development.

In 2011, the Cloquet wood pulp mill underwent a $170 million investment, allowing them to also produce chemical cellulose, which is used to make several household goods.

Leaders say it's part of their commitment to keeping the state a business destination.

"We are just incredibly thrilled of the investment and the commitment that Sappi has made to Minnesota," said Deputy Commissioner, DEED, Kevin McKinnon.

Congressman Rick Nolan was at the ceremony and thanked the State of Minnesota for recognizing world-class companies like Sappi for their use in renewable energy and waste reduction, and for providing 700 jobs to the state.

Sappi's President and CEO, Mark Gardner says he's honored they received the award and looks forward to growth.

In January, Sappi was also recognized for "safety" - by reaching over 2 million man-hours without a loss time injury.
